Review of the ruleUpdated Friday March 10, 2017 by Philip Marcoux.
The rule as noted from the book: “Babe Ruth League, Inc. chartered leagues are required to conduct a nationwide background check on all Managers, Coaches, Board of Directors, and any other persons, volunteers or hired workers, who provide regular service to the league and/or have repetitive access to, or contact with players. The purpose of these background checks is, first and foremost, to protect the players. Once a volunteer has successfully completed the background check, it is good for a three (3) year period.”
Leagues are required to conduct the background check. They may choose any company to perform the service. From Rob Connor, National Babe Ruth Commissioner; “First Advantage and SI-Play's Kids Safe Plus are two partner companies leagues could use. However leagues can use any service company or local police department for checks as log as it meets the rule requirements if the proper level of a check”
However, the leagues are also required to develop and follow an action plan that limits or prevents a volunteer from interacting with a minor if that person can’t pass the background check. Leagues should error on the side of the safety of the kids if there is any question.
